However, even that might not be enough to get me out to the theater. Having read the book I can honestly say there is very little in there that I wanted to see projected onto a giant screen (especially the "um, people").

I appreciate the comparison to "Children of Men" minus of course the brilliant Michael Caine, who could bring a little levity to any global catastrophe. Actually, most of all this review makes me want to watch Ichikawa's - Fires on the Plain... which I'm sure is a movie I should have already heard of, but I am not half the cinephile that Mr. Tan is, but I know that he doesn't throw the word "masterpiece" around lightly :)Al Casciohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08033800219336479548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6099800167920924416.post-49032184048800157132009-06-07T10:45:20.203-07:002009-06-07T10:45:20.203-07:00Truth is, Blood's reviews are as bad as Termin...Truth is, Blood's reviews are as bad as Terminator's...

------SPOILER-------

In the original animation (which hasn't supplied a background story to Saya), it's suggested that Saya is the last to have pure blood of her kind, thus the title.

In the movie, she's said to be the daughter of a human father and the head female demon, and is thus a half-human, half-demon. I was gonna go see terminator salvation but that movie got terrible reviews so i figured i'd go see 'blood' instead. I never saw the anime but i know of it. To make a long story short, the movie sucked. I liked the fight scene with the old guy but other than that the cgi looked like it was from a videogame and the other fightscenes were so close to the action that you literally couldn't see or tell what was going on. The twist at the end was extremely predictable, not to mention that it was hard to understand what the main demon was saying because english isn't her native language. Also, the biggest annoyance to me was the fact that it never explained how she is a vampire.
-----POSSIBLE SPOILER-------
Did her dad end up having sex with the main demon or something? I'm at my parents house for the holidays and I had just started to catch up on your blog when I noticed my name! I really appreciate the post. I rented "The 400 Blows" from netflix a few months ago. I hate to admit that I did not make it through the entire film! I was not in the right mood for watching a child with such a sad life. I also found the pace to be quite slow, especially when watching a film in bed (which I have learned I should not do if I am serious about finishing it!) I will put "Raise the Red Lantern" on my queue, but this time I will be better prepared for a film that takes some emotional stamina.

Yes, netflix is great for catching up on classics. My two recent faves are "All About Eve" and "Dr. Zhivago." And I'm excited that netflix FINALLY has "Still Life", which I requested months ago when you first wrote about it.

I just get envious of the film festivals you have around you in New York. But hey, there's a great speakeasy theater with beer, wine, and comfy couches just down the street from Dan's and my apartment. And on some nights, there's nothing better than the couch at home and a movie that comes in a little red envelope.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09447410638829555686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6099800167920924416.post-17690155896720932692008-07-07T19:59:00.000-07:002008-07-07T19:59:00.000-07:00Speaking of Colin Farrell, when are you going to p...Speaking of Colin Farrell, when are you going to post about In Bruges, which is probably the best film I've seen all year. Not reflections, per se, but still clearly selective in what we see of these characters and their situations and how we see it, and therefore not "merely documents". I think Flight of the Red Balloon seems to be playing at this when we find out that Song is in fact working on a remake of the original Red Balloon, suggesting that FotRB is actually her finished film, creating yet another surface of separation for our perception.

Personally, I don't think the makers of Kung Fu Panda are to be underestimated with regards to the feelings they may (or may not) have about cinematic surfaces. When Po first enters the temple, one of the comments he makes is pretty sly (and telling): "I've only seen paintings of this painting!"

-k-Mr. Tanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01432523558517614302noreply@blogger.com
